221848 Pte. Albert Francis Laking British Army 2nd Btn. B Coy. East Yorkshire Regiment from:Leeds (d.27th Feb 1945) Uncle Albert Laking was in Montgomery's veritable plan to take the bridges at Schaddenoff. The plan was to take the bridge and move on to out flank the Germans , unfortunately they met fierce resistance from the newly formed German regiment consisting of paratroopers, engineers and infantry. The East Yorkshire took the bridge and after several counter attacks managed to hold on until relief and supplies arrived. The casualty count was very high including Albert. After the battle the bridge was baptised "Yorkshire Bridge". Uncle Albert is interred in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery.
