218894 Sgt. George Edward Reeve Royal Air Force 101 Squadron from:Birchanger, Hertfordshire (d.22nd/23rd Sep 1943) George Reeve was my mother's fiance and lived in Birchanger near Bishops Stortford in Hertfordshire. My mother's brother Bill was a very good friend of George. Bill missed George very much a and was annoyed jokingly that he had given George his sheaf-Knife for a goodluck charm and now it lies somewhere in Germany. I have a photo of George and also his last letter to my mum.
George served with the Royal Air Force 101 Squadron. His Lancaster bomber W4324 SR-M took off from Ludford Magna at 18:52 on 22nd of September 1943 on a large night raid. The Lancaster crashed at Geest Munde near Bremerhaven, Germany. Additional Information: | We were very intrigued to see you entry regarding George Reeve. He was my wife's cousin and before the war he often used to visit my wife's family in Harlow. His mother Alice used to run a small shop in Stoney Common, Stansted which is where the family lived and my wife and her sisters often used to visit them there.
We too have a photo of George taken shortly after he joined the RAF, presumably before he underwent flight crew training as he still an airman. (no stripes).
His father died not very long after George and his mother eventually came to live near her sister (my wife's mother) in Harlow.
A few years ago we visited Ludford Magna, but as you may know there is not very much to see of the airfield now.
