Ch.Eng. James Brown

Merchant Navy M.V. Empire Attendant

(d.15th July 1942)

James Brown died aged 28 on 15th of July 1942 onboard the MV Empire Attendant. Five days earlier after breaking down for the seventh time, the ship became a straggler from the convoy. At 0330 hours on 15th of July 1942, South of the Canary Islands, out of contact with the convoy she was torpedoed and sunk by U-582. There were no survivors and the master, 49 crew members and nine gunners were lost.

James was the son of John Dixon Brown and Hannah Louisa Brown (nee Lowes) of Jarrow and husband of Ada M. Brown (nee Hayward) of Jarrow. His younger brother Dixon Brown was also one of the fallen.

James is remembered on the Tower Hill Memorial.
