My Father Jack Jones, was captured on Crete when the Germans parachuted on to the Island. My father and his mates were backed on to the beach and before they surrendered they all removed their boots and threw them in the sea, as the Germans shot on site any Commandos captured and they could only identify them by their boots.
They were then marched to Poland, Lambowich to Stalag VIII-B POW Camp where he spent the rest of the war. I have recently found his diary of the Long March to Poland and the food rations they were given.
Like many captives my Dad did not speak much about the war or the March but all of the situations they faced must have been horrific. God bless all those who gave so much for us
