A.B. Albert "Alby" Howland

Royal Navy

from:Newcastle upon Tyne

My father, Albert Howland served on HMS Nigeria, during the Russian convoys and Malta convoy. He went to Charleston after Nigeria was torpedoed. He was the 'unofficial' ships barber, using hand shears to cut hair and cut throat razors to shave. He told me he was reasonably priced, only 6d for a hair cut! After the war he tried to open his own barber shop, but it didn't work out, so he became an electrician. He died in 1971.
