LAC Frederick John "Bill" Bailey
Royal air force 83 squadron
(d.23 November 1943)
My father, Fred (Bill) Bailey died on 23 November 1943 while bombing up a Lancaster at RAF Wyton when a photoflash detonated a large bomb. My mother would never talk of the incident and never recovered; she is now deceased. I would appreciate any information of the incident or of any person who may have known my father.
Additional Information:
On the afternoon of 23rd Nov 1943 I was cycling from 156 squadron Warboys to go to Huntingdon to go on leave. As I approached a dispersal point near the road at RAF Wyton, there was an enormous ball of flame and an explosion which blew me off my bike and then debris rained down. There was an airman cycling ahead of me, also from Warboys, who was killed but I just suffered bruising.
I have never forgotten that accident and even after 72 years I can still see the occurence as though it happened yesterday
