from:Milwaukee, Wi, USA

Bermuda 1943

My Dad, Herbert Lukaszewski enlisted on July 24th, 1942. His training started at Great Lake's, from there, he chose Aviation Mechanics and ended up at Navy Pier for 6 months. As he did well there, he went on to advanced school on the South side of Chicago where he chose hydraulics.

He went to Bermuda where he joined crew 9 in Squadron VB-105. He flew on the 'Carolyn.' He replaced a suicide victim. Then he was on to England. Dad flew 31 missions over the Bay of Biscay. Dad said they lost 23 of 36 planes for various reasons. He was in one of the 'lucky' 13. May of 1944 he completed his missions.

He was home for a 30 day mission when D-Day took place. Dad then went to Norfolk where he was made a plane captain. Some questioning about billetting arose and his crew went to NAS Harvey Point in North Carolina. Three weeks later he was in Boca Chica, Florida. Then it was on to Chincoteaque, VA to prepare to return to England when the war in Europe ended. As aircraft returned from Europe, Dad ferried 2 planes to the Southwest. He then reported to Seattle, Wa to NAS whidbey Island. For one week, the base was fogged in so they went to Crow's landing, CA for more training. After extensive training, he transferred to Alameda. They were to go to Okinawa to prepare for the invasion of Japan. They were fueled and ready to go when the atomic bombs were dropped.

After 3 years,4 months and 12 days, Dad was honorably discharged from the Navy. Dad went to college on the GI Bill and graduated from UW Madison with a degree in Chemical Engineering.
