209033 RSM. Arthur George Mends British Army Royal Signals from:Derby My Grandfather, George Mends was from Pembrokeshire. He joined the Army at a young age and was sent to Chilwell Barracks. He was in Iceland on 29th March 1941, the day my Mum was born. My Gran, Lavinia, wrote to him, asking what to call the baby and waited for his reply before naming her. She was 3 years old when she saw him for the first time and ran screaming that a strange man was coming. George kept his silver-topped cane by the fire all his life. Does anyone remember him?
