208716 Horace Victor Hicks British Army Pioneer Corps (d.17th June 1940) I have a friend who lives in Australia and whose father, Horace Victor Hicks
died on the Lancastria on 17th June 1940. My friend is hoping to visit England some time next year and would like to go to Dunkirk to visit the spot where his father died when he was a young boy. He would like to find out if there is any memorial or if, in fact, there may be a named burial site to the soldiers who died on the Lancastria. Can anyone help? Additional Information: | The Lancastria was sunk off St. Nazaire in the estuary of the river Loire. During the weeks afterwards many bodies must have been washed up along the coast to the south of the estuary as a number of communal cemeteries in the Vendee departement have graves of those killed. Four former Pioneer Corps men have graves at Saint Gilles-Croix de Vie, four or five are in a neighbouring commune, Saint Hilaire de Riez, and one in a village called Triaize, south of Lucon. These are only a few that I know of: I would expect there to be many more considering the terrible loss of life. The graves are all maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, from whom you may be able to gain more information. I hope this helps.Douglas Stephens
