Lt. J. A. Caven

British Army 115th Field Regiment, 240 Bty. Royal Artillery

from:Leicester, England.

I am researching a rare book, which is inscribed with the name Lt. JA Caven and the number 507, of Leicester, England. It bears the stamp of Oflag V11B with the word 'Gapruft' and appears to have been sent to him as a gift. Does anyone have any information as to the service details of this officer?

Additional Information:

2/Lt. J. A. Caven was an Officer in 115 Field Regiment RA (240 Bty) who was captured in May 1940 by the Germans during the BEF's retreat to Dunkirk; on either the 28th May or 29th. This was shortly after he and another 2/Lt. from the same Battery were involved in action at a bridge over the River Lys at Merville, France on 28th May. They had become separated from the rest of the Battery and had two guns available. During this action, this Troop (probably 'C' Troop) disabled and knocked out 5 German tanks and this earned them both the Military Cross, although 2/Lt. Caven got his award retrospectively after in December, 1945. 2/Lt. Caven was captured whilst escorting wounded personnel back to Dunkirk. If you come across any other information about him, then please let me know as I'm writing a history of this Regiment during the Dunkirk period.
