Reginald Alban Smith
British Army 3 Commando
My father, Pte. Reginald Alban Smith of 3 Commando was taken prisoner 19th August 1942 at Dieppe and was held in shackles for about 18 months following capture, a Prisoner at Stalag 8b (334)
Additional Information:
Graham, Your father Reg Smith & along with Nick Jones did Commando training in Largs & was billeted with Mary & Alex Buchanan at 10 Harper Crescent Largs. He may possibly have been with 3 Commando on the successful Lofoten Raid which preceded the disastrous 'Operation Jubilee' and the landing at 'Yellow Beach' Dieppe. My late mother had fond memories of the Commandos stay in Largs & in particular of your father. They exchanged correspondence whilst your father was POW 26450 at Stalag V111 B & mother kept in touch with Ellen during & after the war. Incidentally your father's father's rank was Sergeant. Should you wish I would be pleased to hear from you.
