Harry Augustus "Abbs" Howes
Bevin Boys
from:South London
My Dad Harry Howes served as a Bevin Boy at Ashington Colliery in the Second World War. He told me that he hated his time down the mines it was the worst time of his life. He said that the general miners took a dislike to the Bevin Boys and he hated being stuck working underground. My dad wanted to go in his dad's regiment which was the King's Royal Artillery but was chosen by a number out of the hat to go down the mines. I'm glad that I have my dad's medal and I know that he was proud to serve his country down the mine.
