Charles Percy Reynolds
British Army
My father Charles Reynolds served in Burma from 1943 to 1946. He recalled running alongside the train transporting him and many other soldiers across India. He was in the last truck of the train and many of the men got out to run alongside as it was very slow. Dad's turn came, he got out and started running when the train sped up. Several frantic sprinting minutes later the train slowed down again and he managed to scramble back aboard.
On one occasion a new officer insisted that he had the wrong type of gun and made him exchange it, he was left with a new gun and the wrong ammunition just as they were attacked. He was involved in some kind of explosion, possibly a vehicle crash and was (we believe) covered in burning petrol. He told other members of the family that he saved himself by jumping into a water butt. He was always very careful to cover the scars in public.
Like many veterans he rarely spoke of his experiences and would only tell me the comical stories. I realise it is unlikely at this point but if anyone knew him we would be glad to know more.
