Harold Dennis Willing
British Army Dental Corps
from:Harlesden, NW London
My Dad, Harold Willing was stationed at Chiseldon, near Swindon, Wilts in 1941, then posted to Europe for the duration of the war until its end. Prior to his mobilisation, he was assigned to the dental corps, as due to less than A1 health, he wasn't deemed fit enough to go to the front line. But as war progressed, he was re-assessed and given A1 status. He suffered shrapnel wounds, but apart from this he thankfully returned home at the end of the war to my mum, Ella, whom he had met and married in 1942 during his stay at Chiseldon. Like many veterans of war, he chose not to go into much detail of his memories of war - save to say that he had nothing but praise for those with whom he served alongside and for those who led them so well. Whenever he did talk of those friends he did it with tear-filled eyes, so strong were those bonds. My Dad would have loved to have viewed this site, to share his thoughts and stories, so, on his behalf and as an immensely proud daughter, I write in his memory hoping maybe that one or two who served alongside my lovely Dad will read this and be able to share their memories with me. Thank you for giving yourselves for my freedom and that of my family. God Bless you all.
