206145 Sgt. Robert Leigh Royal Air Force 166 Sqdn from:Whittle-le-Woods, Lancashire. (d.24th Sep 1944) I am seeking any information on my lost relative. His name was Bob Leigh and was at Kirmington with Lancaster Bomber Sqdn 166, as a rear gunner. He died when his plane was shot down over Germany. He was 19 years old. I would really appreciate any info. His name is on the Memorial at Runnymede. Additional Information: | My great uncle was Sgt Cyril Leon Caston, aged 20 (flight engineer) from Norwich, on Lancaster III LM722 coded AS_D. Your relative was Sgt Robert Leigh was the rear gunner. Records indicate they all completed 17 missions before being lost 23-24/09/44, with 166 Sqn from Kirmington. They have no known grave, there are no German flak or fighter claims or wreckage of their Lancaster identified on land, so it is assumed they crashed in the North Sea either going to or returning from a raid to Neuss.
The Pilot was F/O James Glynn Davies, A/B F/O Forbes Cameron, FE Sgt Cyril Caston, NAV, Sgt Arthur Rollinson, W/O Sgt James MacKenzie Dillon (Australian) MUG Sgt Roger Brockwell Ward and RG Sgt Robert Leigh. Fraser Gambling
