Flt Sgt. Neville Aubrey Fearneyhough

Royal Air Force 77 Squadron

from:Gateshead

My father Neville Fearneyhough (d 2006) was stationed at RAF Elvington with Squadron 77. He was shot down in Holland on 1 May 1943 on the way to bomb Essen.(He was the navigator/observer) Only he and another, Butlin, survived. He was hidden by Dutch resistance leader Dr J Kreimel near Apeldoorn and was put on the escape route via Paris. This had been infiltrated by de Witter and he was betrayed to the Gestapo. He eventually was a POW of the Luftwaffe. He escaped during the retreat from the Red Army but was recaptured and treated for dipththeria in a POW hospital full of Russians with TB. As a POW he taught himself Latin and was able to matriculate.

I can't trace any more wartime information about Joe Kreimel, but I do know he was decorated by Prince Bernhard and I have letters from him to my father after the war. He was a doctor and hid a number of Jews as well as allied Airmen.

Additional Information:

My parents have a caravan on a campground in Hoenderloo in the Netherlands. The campground is surrounding by forests. My father used to tell me storys about how he as a child and other children played in the forest, and looked for tiny pieces of an aircraft from ww2. He told me it was exciting because the remains of the aircraft was on a rest area and they had to be careful not to get caught.

I'm very interested in history always has been. and world war 2 has always touched me even though I was born long after the war. So is started to look for the airplane and his story. and finally I found several documents of a Halifax Mk2 JB783 KN-N aircraft crashed near Spelderholt forest between Uchelen and Hoenderloo it turned out this aircraft couldn't be the same because my father told me it was on the other side of the forest.' Even so this was not the aircraft where is was looking for in the first instance. I wanted to know more about these young boys not many younger than I am. What happened? Who were they? What did they love?

I found out that five of them where killed and two of them where taken prison. is in the documents the crash were on 1 May 1943 on 4:40. is in the police report the remains of the aircraft where found and the two survivors on Monday 10th May 1943, 10 days later. I found it so sad that nobody found them and helped them (thankfully now I know someone did tried) horrible that they where betrayed. I couldn't find anything if they survived. I'm happy to hear they did.

I went to the graves of four of the killed boys ( the fifth is in Groesbeek NL) and on one of the graves stood : Greater Love Hath No Man Than This, it moved me more than I can say. I will never forget their sacrifice. If you want the documents of course I can send them to you. If you need any help finding info I will help you gladly.
