Pte. Ernest John Walton

British Army 3rd Field Ambulance Royal Army Medical Corps

from:Cheltenham

(d.8th Feb 1944)

Pte Ernest J Walton of the 3rd Field Ambulance, RAMC was killed at Anzio on the 8th Feb 1944. If anyone has knowledge of what events took place this day and the preciding few days we would be very grateful.

Additional Information:

Ernest Walton would have been kept very busy on the 8th February. The Germans attacked the Buonriposo Ridge, driving The 2nd North Staffordshire Regiment off the hill as part of an attack which extended along the line of the ridge. Much has been written about Anzio, of which I recommend Anzio 1944: an Unexpected Fury by Verney.

The National Archives hold war diaries of the 3rd Filed Ambulance, but these have not yet been digitised, and this means a visit (or expense!). The reference I will be looking at is WO 177/680. My interest is that my father was with the 2 NS, was wounded and visited by the Field Ambulance that night before the position was overrun.
