Tpr. Henry Thomas Jones
British Army Dragoon Guards
from:6 Prospect Place, Tredegar
My father Henry Jones, joined in Aug 14 and was demobbed in Apr 19. He was knowledgeable about horses and riding; accordingly he joined the Queens Bays in Aldershot and spent some time "breaking-in" horses. He was despatched to France/Belgium in early 1915.
He served most of his time with 6th Inniskilling Dragoons and I believe that he was in The Bays only for his training.
The family is in possession of his paybook, medals, Christmas card, sent from France and some photos These are large pics taken during his Aldershot days, one of him on horseback, the other in the stable, carrying a bucket. They are approx 2' square in large frames.
I also know that he was servant (batman) to Major Buckley of the family that owned Buckley's brewery in South Wales. I have a small number of stories. eg Capt Oates served in the "Skins". I understand that every Christmas his mother sent every soldier a tin with cigarettes or pipe tobacco together with accompaniments, such as matches.
I do have brief details of the "Skins" in WW1 but would welcome greater detail.
