Group Captain John Alexander "Speedy" Powell DSO, DFC, OBE
Royal Air Force 19 Sqd.
(d.18th Aug 1944)
I understand that Group Captain Powell was at Feltwell during WW2 although not as a Group captain at the time. He was a pilot and flew Wellingtons amongst other aircraft. Can anyone confirm whether he did?
Additional Information:
Group Captain Speedy Powell flew five Wellington op's with 75 (NZ) Squadron out of Feltwell, Sept 41 - Oct 42. I came across these op's in the Operational Record Books while researching another individual, Len Chambers, a Wireless Op who went on to become a Dambuster. He is listed in the ORB's as a Group Captain, not W/C.
As Powell appears to have been CO of 149 Sqdn based at Mildenhall at the time I have no idea why he was flying op's with another Sqdn and am trying to find clues - that's what led me to this post. One 75 guru believes that he had a brother serving with 75 as a Wireless Op/Gunner but that connection hardly seems to explain why.
