Thomas Giddings left school aged 12 and eventually joined the Royal Navy becoming Signaller and expert in morse code. His ship was prized by the Germans as it had one man submarines on board.

He served on a few other ships whilst in the Navy but contracted malaria whilst in Africa from which he recovered. Even though he sailed around the world during the war, he never went abroad again once the war had ended. He could also complete The Times cryptic crosswords in no time.
