Ernest Whitfield was born on 21st May 1917 and baptised at the Parish Church, Newchurch in Culcheth on 5th August 1917. His father and mother were John Henry and Miriam Whitfield and his father was a railway shunter.
Ernest was recorded on the 1939 Register as a cotton worker who resided at 97, Twiss Green Lane, Culcheth, Lancashire. He served with the 8th Battalion, Manchester Regiment.
