His father and mother were John Henry and Miriam Whitfield and his father was a railway shunter. Ernest was recorded on the 1939 Register as a cotton worker who resided at 97, Twiss Green Lane, Culcheth, Lancashire. He served with the 8th Battalion, Manchester Regiment.
