A/CPO. Henry Nimmo Mcleod
Royal Navy HMS Vestal
(d.26th Jul 1945)
My granddad Henry McLeod was Acting Chief Petty Officer in the engine room when the ship was struck and he was one of the 20 men who died. My Nan then had to repay the Royal Navy for his kit which hadn’t been returned. For 18 months they stopped her war windows' pension.
My dad was 14 months old when his dad died for this country.
HMS Sussex scuttled the Vestal but didn’t mark it on any chart so nobody knew where it was until 2004, when divers found the ship's bell.
Thanks to those people who identified the ship, otherwise myself and my dad would never know where the ship was sunk.
It was the last allied ship to be sunk in the Second World War.
