Sea. William Dearden

Royal Navy MV Torrent

from:Bardsley, Ashton Under Lyne

(d.6th Apr 1941)

My uncle William Dearden served briefly on HMS Glendower in October/November 1940. Sadly, he was killed in action on 6th April 1941 whilst serving on the MV Torrent, which was engaged in mine-hunting duties near Falmouth. A mine detonated, killing most on board. Fortunately, his body was recovered and he is buried in Bardsley Christ Church graveyard. He was 20 years old. His grave was recently acknowledged by the CWGC, and a plaque is to be placed outside the church to recognise the grave as an official war grave.
