Able Sea. James "Lucky Jim" Blake

Royal Navy HMS Vega

from:Carshalton. Surrey

Our grandad James Blake was one of the lucky ones. We believe he was on shore leave at the time his ship was struck and sunk. He joined the Navy before WW2 started. We have a photo of his cap band and the medals which he was given. The only photo we have is of another ship called HMS Vega. He was then, we were told, stationed on a minesweeper in North Africa, and once again he survived his ship sinking (we are not quite sure of its name but we were told it was named after a flower). Amongst his crewmates he was thereafter known as Lucky Jim.
