Cpl. Gerald Edward Cannings

British Army 2nd Btn. Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders

Gerald Edward Cannings

Gerald Cannings was my Dad, who volunteered to go into the Army even though he had a protected occupation as a aircraft fitter. He fought in France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. He landed in France on D+6 and went right though the war to Germany, where he met my Mother. He never told me a lot about the war apart from he got shot in the foot by one of his mates messing about with a gun. He got married to my Mother in Germany and lost his stripes for that! After the end of the war, they lived in Germany for 15 years, then they came back to England, to Coventry, and he went back to aircraft fitting. Later they moved down to Bournemouth, where he lived the rest of his life.
