249489 CPO. Edward John "Andy" Anderson Royal Navy HMS Defiance III from:Mary Tavy, Devon Edward Anderson was a ship's cook on board HMS Essex, during the First World War. Before joining the Navy, he was employed in the mining industry in Mary Tavy, Devon. In this first term in the Navy, he had the distinction of being a champion breadmaker of the Mediterranean Fleet. He re-joined the Navy in 1931 and is recorded in the 1939 Register as CPO Cook on HMS Defiance, the Navy's torpedo school near Saltash in Cornwall. He was invalided out of the Navy during this period of service when some explosive substance was thrown into his galley stove. He was unable to use his right hand and subsequently learned to write left handed. I believe he made a full recovery. He died in 1956, cleaning the front step of his home in St Budeaux.
