Tpr. Ernest "Ern" Fowler
British Army 49th (West Riding) Regiment Reconnaissance Corps
My Uncle Ern, Ernest Fowler, enlisted into the 70th Young Soldiers Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment, early in WWII.
He later transferred to the 13th/18th Hussars before joining the 49th (West Riding) Reconnaissance Regiment.
He landed at Gold Beach on D Day +1 and was later wounded when the Bren Gun Carrier he was driving was hit by a German 88 shell.
Uncle Ern survived the war and later worked at the Fire Service Technical College, Moreton in Marsh. He was awarded the British Empire Medal for his work building scenarios for the trainee firefighters to tackle during their training.
