Sgt. Charles William Appleby

Royal Air Force 76 Squadron

Sgt Appleby was a rear gunner serving on 76 Squadron. He was killed in action by shrapnel from a flak burst during the bombing run up to the target over Russelsheim on 13th of August 1944. The squadron was one of those tasked with attacking the Opel vehicle works in Russelsheim. His aircraft, a Halifax B MkIII MP-B (LW637) survived the flak burst although the pilot, mid upper gunner, wireless operator and possible the navigator were seriously wounded and completed their attack on the target and returned to the UK, crash landing at the Woodbridge Emergency Aerodrome.

Sgt Charles Appleby was buried was buried in a Commonwealth War Grave in his home town of Burton-on-Trent.
