Austin Miner served with the United States Navy. There is not a lot of material available concerning Boot Camp at Camp Perry (Peary), Virginia, which was closed after WWII and later opened and became known as The Farm.

During November and December 1945, there occurred quite a siege of Spinal Meningitis. The third week of December 1945, the Camp was closed for 2 weeks, shut down, in quarantine. It was expressed that several deaths occurred. No one was allowed to leave or enter, including the Officers who had family on the outside.
