Pte. George Haynes

British Army 2nd Battalion Cambridgeshire Regiment

from:Barton le clay

(d.26th January 1942)

My grandfather, George Haynes, was killed in the Battle for Singapore on 26th January 1942, a day after my grandmother's 25th birthday (who only last week celebrated her 101st birthday). Like many others my Grandmother was left with my father who was 10 months old at the time. She only knew that George was missing, and didn't know he had been killed until a prisoner of war, came home to tell her that he had seen George shot dead, this person had tried to get to George to take his watch and personal belongings in the hope of returning them to my Grandmother. Sadly he was taken prisoner before he had time.

If anyone has any photos of the 2nd Battalion I would be pleased to purchase a copy.
