Womens Auxiliary Air Force

from:Hanworth, Middlesex

Doris (right) and Joyce at Pershore Cottage opposite the airfield 1944

My mum Doris Lewendon was called up and sent to Hounslow Heath for training as an Electrician. She was posted to Pershore (Throckmorton) Airfield where she worked from about 1942 to 1945. They had bikes to get around the Airfield and she used to cycle down the runway to fix the runway lights. She was billeted with her great friend Joyce Harwood in one of the cottages directly opposite the main entrance, which is still there today. She remembered the dances held in the village hall. We have one photo of mum and Joyce outside the cottage. Doris is on the right.
