Ldg Wireman. Raymond Dennis Chapman

Royal Navy HMS Copra

from:Lincoln

Raymond Chapman is my father. He joined the Royal Navy Training at HMS Excaliber, Forcastle Division on 4th of June 1943 aged 20 years. He proceeded to serve his training in various establishments. One place was at Hopetoun House and training at Boness Docks for the Tank Landing Crafts. It was here that my father met and married my mother who was serving in the ATS. He became a leading wireman and was discharged from HMS Copra on the 24th June 1946. I know he was part of the Normandy landings on 6th June 1944 when he landed the Americans on Omaha Beach. It was a traumatic experience and he did not like to talk about it.

He had a family of eight children and I am the eldest and live in Cairns, Australia. We are so proud of his achievements. I have only now received information of my father's service during the Second World War. My mother Janet Chapman received the Freedom of Falkirk for her services during the Second World War. We are so proud of our Dad. Lest we forget. (The Chapman Family)
