The family story is that Charlie Smith was accidentally shot during training by a friend. He was apparently always up to something, so the family was not surprised. He was buried on 22nd of December 1941 at Islington Cemetery, aged 18 years of age, and his place of abode was given as Castle Camps, Cambridgeshire. He is also commemorated on the Brookwood Memorial.
