Sam Campbell was a forward artillery observer stationed near Winterspelt, Germany in December 1944. He was taken prisoner in the opening hours of the Ardennes Offensive, the Battle of the Bulge and was transported to Stalag XII-A by rail car. He was wounded in the 22nd-23rd of December 1944 (reported dates vary) friendly fire incident in which RAF Mosquito bombers mistakenly bombed the camp.
