James Boyle was killed in the early hours prior to the regiment moving to cross the River Senio near Ravenna Italy. He was killed with 4 other regimental members when a German mortar shell exploded in the fox hole they were in.The story the family was given was that the other boys died instantly and James shortly after.

He is buried in the allied cemetery near Ravenna.
