Pfc. Carl F. Hemauer

United States Army 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment

from:Stockbridge, WI

Our uncle, Carl Hemauer, enlisted on 5th of November 1941 and was captured on 6th of June 1944. I have only heard bits and pieces of his story. His parents were told that he perished and did not know for some time that their only remaining son was still alive. Their other son, Miles, died in a training accident in 1943. Private Hemauer was targeted by the guards because of his German name and ancestry and suffered while in captivity. When he returned home after the war, he moved to an isolated part of Oregon, married later in life and did not have children. He was a patriot who loved his country. I wish I knew more.
