Pfc. Robert Lee Johnson

United States Army 317th 80th Div

from:Ohio

My Dad, Robert Lee Johnson, was from Kentucky. enlisted into the Army June 6th 1942 at the age of 29. He went thru basic training at several camps Tenn, Camp Phillips in Kansas, Arizona, Ft Dix, Camp Kilmner then boarded the Queen Mary.

He was captured Sept 6th 1944 somewhere outside Metz in a barn, according to his POW Identification paper. He was taken to Stalag 4B first where he spent 3 months. Then was moved to Stalag 7A for 3 months, he was liberated and returned to Camp Kilmer. I found some paperwork of his and it shows where he graduated from cooking school to be a 1st cook.

I have been trying to locate pictures of him on the internet and I have typed in everything I can think of for 3 years and still cannot find any pictures of him anywhere. Other then the ones I found in my mother's picture album.

If anyone recognizes his picture that I am enclosing, if you or anyone has any pictures of him can you please send me a copy to my email.

I found a list of his company L names, of the men that are in the group picture taken at Ft Dix New Jersey in April of 1944.

  • He was a member of the 80th Division.
  • His prison number is 87882
  • his service number is 35460133

I have found all his army records online but no pictures of him with his buddies or carrying a gun, or doing anything. I'd sure appreciate some help in locating some pictures of him. Perhaps you have a photo of your loved one or a friend, and it has written on it that my dad, Robert L Johnson, is in the picture. If so I'd appreciate a copy of it.

My dad passed away in January 1986 when i was 18.

I have now decided to put together pictures of him in an album along with all his army information and pictures to give my brothers and sisters an idea of what he went thru. I even tried to find pictures of him in Stalag7A but I could not pick him out. It's not making it any easier, the fact that my dad was born in 1913. He was 29 when he went into the Army and I wasn't born til 1965, so I'm having to figure out what he might have looked like, almost 30 years before I was born.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks and God Bless, as a son of an 80th div member, I will "keep going forward" til I find what I am looking for.

I have someone from ONE HELL OF A WAR website on Facebook, who also has been trying to help me. You can reach me on Facebook. If anyone would have a group photo of the 317th Infantry Company L I would appreciate getting a copy of that also.
