Sgt. Lionel de la Force Wheble
British Army 3rd Maritime Regiment Royal Artillery
from:Salisbury, Wilts
My father, Lionel de la Force Wheble, was a gunner for 30 years, and was still serving when I enlisted in the RA.
After his retirement he became the Secretary of the local branch of the RAA and later Secretary for the MRA (Maritime Royal Artillery) Old Comrades Association, and a keen amateur historian and advocate for this little known branch of the Gunners - they served as Anti-Aircraft Gunners on board merchant ships. Dad's service taking him across the Atlantic, through the Arctic to Archangel and Murmansk in Russia, the Mediterranean and to the Far East.
