Eric Fisher

Merchant Navy

I lived in Manchester and was bombed several times. There was some close bombing around us in the early part of war. The closest was a land mine. An entire family of nine were never discovered. The mines were more destructive than 500lb bombs.

I Went into the Merchant Navy at age 17 in 1942, until 1945. I was at Algiers in November 1942, then went to the Persian Gulf and India during 1943 and 1944. I was on many Atlantic voyages in 1945. There were lots of near misses and lost shipmates. I returned to the sea after army service in 1956.
