James Atkinson died at the age of 22 whilst serving with the Merchant Navy. He received the King's Commendation for Brave Conduct. He was the son of Andrew Cosser Mather Atkinson and Louisa Atkinson (nee Hunter) of Primrose Jarrow and husband of Olive Atkinson (nee Dial) of Hebburn His older brothers George Atkinson and William Hunter Atkinson where also among the fallen.

James is remembered on the Tower Hill Memorial.
