Stories from 17th July 1944

Gnr. James " " Stanaway. , 71st Anti Tank Regiment . (d.17th Jul 1944)

I'm looking for information about or anyone who served with my great uncle James Stanaway from Smethwick, Staffordshire (now West Midlands). He was killed in Caen in July 1944 aged 21, whilst serving with the Royal Artillery 71st Anti Tank. He was the son of Alice and James Stanaway of Smethwick.

Dennis Day

Pte. William Percy Butcher. British Army, 2nd Btn. Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment. (d.17th July 1944)

Pte William Percy Butcher was my Great Uncle on my father's side. I was researching my family history and his information came up on a War memorial in Meppershall Bedfordshire at St Mary's Church. I also found his details on a site for war graves. He is buried at Arezzo War Cemetery in Italy. It is good to know that you can access these sites quite quickly as my father didn't know much about his life and what happened to him. I am sure he will be pleased to know that he has had a memorial in his name.

Fus. Leuan Evans. British Army, 6th Btn. Royal Welch Fusiliers. (d.17th July 1944)

Ieuan Evans was my Grandfather, but my Father did not know this man was his father until he was 70 years old. I am desperate for any more details if anyone has any. My Father is 80 now and knows hardly anything about Ieuan. How would I find out where he is buried etc?

Mrs Farmer

Pte. Stanley George Kent. British Army, 1/7th Btn. Royal Warwickshire Regiment. (d.17th July 1944)

Stanley Kent was my great uncle. I do not know much about him but this is what I have been told. He was married to Iris Alexandra and has a son called Norman Tommy Kent. After the war my grandad Thomas Henry Kent, Stanley's brother, asked the church for permission to marry Iris and they had a daughter.

I hope to discover more about my great uncle and one day find his marker in Tessel.

Gemma Kent

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
