Stories from 16th July 1944

Cpl. John Michael Martin. British Army, 6th Battalion, D coy. Kings Own British Borders. (d.4th Oct 1944)

The Fighting Fools

by Cpl John Michael Martin, D-Coy 6th KOSB 16th July 1944

Remember that hill termed 113?

To many just a number,

Except the KOSB

But wait,I'll tell it to you right

Of the KOSB's brave and gallant fight.

Though their numbers were few,

They did not quail,

They had been given a task,

And they would not fail.

They would hold that ground,

Come what may,

And though cut off,

Kept the Hun at bay.

The Boche tried everything they knew,

To try and make a big breakthrough,

But they'd underestimated those heroes all,

Who, before they'd retreat,

Decided to fight or fall,

So they took the strain and did not flinch,

And the Boche advanced not a single inch.

So praise those lads of the 6/KOSB

Whose stand made possible this victory,

Unknown till now, they've made their name,

And covered their Regiment with undying fame.

Cpl. John Martin was wounded in action and died at 4 am on the 4th Oct 1944 in 39th British General Hospital - due to a shell wound to his neck which left him paralised. He is buried in the Brussels Town Cemetary.

Cpl. John Henry Ferguson. British Army, The Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. (d.16th Jul 1944)

My grandfather, John H Ferguson served in the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry until his death 16/7/1944. He is buried in Italy. He was born in Durham county but lived in Plymouth where my mother was born. Sadly, I don't have much information at all. My grandmother was pregnant with her second child, Jacqueline and my mother was aged 6 when he died. They moved to South Africa after the war.

Pte. William Kenneth Bailey. British Army, 7th Battalion Hampshire Regiment. (d.16th July 1944)

As a philatelist I acquired some WWII forces mail to the same address in South Wales. One was from Ken Bailey in June 1944 to his parents. Only on reading the other two, sent later, did I realise these were from soldier friends sending condolences. Research shows he was killed in the Hampshires attack on Maltot, Normandy two weeks after the letter I have was sent - probably one of his last home. He is buried in Bayeux War Cemetery.

Pte. George Orson Shorrock. British Army, 4th (Hallamshire) Btn. York and Lancaster Regiment. (d.16th July 1944)

George Shorrock

Major Alan James Stuart. British Army, 4th Battalion Welch Regiment. (d.16th July 1944)

We have recently taken ownership of a book owned by this brave gentleman, Major Alan Stuart of the 4th Battalion, Welch Regiment. His signature and date of ownership (1936) sparked a passionate interest for us to reunite the book with his family.

Captain A Stuart took command of the battalion on 7th of July 1944 following the wounding and extraction of his senior officer. On 13th of July 1944 he was promoted to Major, only for this to be cut short 3 days later when he fell in battle on 16th of July 1944.

If anyone can help our quest we would be very grateful.

Stuart Ingram

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
