Sgt. wilfred Whittam 77 Squadron (d.27th Feb 1942)

My grandfather was stationed at RAF Leeming. His name was Wilfred Whittam and he was a sergeant in the RAF Volunteer Reserve working as an air gunner/wireless operator on Whitley aircraft. He was killed in action on February 27th 1942 and is buried in Driesum Churchyard in the Netherlands.

Sgt. Harold Stanley Cutler (d.16th Oct 1942)

Flight Sergeant Harold Stanley 'Bat' Cutler, died as a result of wounds incurred during a flying accident on 13th October, on 16 October 1942. Sergeant Cutler was the pupil pilot in Airspeed Oxford AP395 of No 15 (P) Advanced Flying Unit operating from Acaster Malbis. He and Sgt J N MacIver took off at about 19.45 to undertake night flying training. Visibility deteriorated and the pilot lost sight of the flare path, though a rumour exists that electronic night flying aids were switched off due to concerns about local enemy activity. They descended from 600 to 100 ft in an attempt to establish their whereabouts. As a result of this descent the aircraft hit a tree and crashed at 20.30 near Esrick about 3 miles South East of the Airfield. Sergeant Cutler is buried in my local churchyard, the Lickey (Holy Trinity) Churchyard, Worcestershire.

John Valentine Hill 57 Squadron (d.26th Mar 1942)

I am currently researching detains of my Grandad's cousin, John Hill who died on the 26th March 1942 aged 21. He served in the 57 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He is buried at the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery at Reichwald Forest in Germany.

What I have managed to find out so far is that during the time of his death the 57 Squardon were flying Wellington Bombers and according to the RAF bomber command diary carried out bombing raid on the German town of Essen on the nights of 25/26 where they lost 3 Wellingtons as well as other aircraft and also on the following night of 26/27 where they lost 10 Wellingtons.

I hope to carry out more research to find out which raid he died in and maybe details of his aircraft and crew. I am going to try and locate any photos. If anyone has more information please feel feee to email me.

F/O. Nelson Avery 142 Squadron (d.13th July 1943)

Nelson Avery was a cousin of my grandmother. As a young boy I was always told that he was killed at Arnhem, together with his brother William, and for years I assumed that they were both killed during Operation Market-Garden. I recently learned that, in fact, Nelson was killed in 1943 when his Wellington failed to return from Messina and that William was killed in 1944 during operations in Walcheren, Holland and is buried at Bergen-Op-Zoom War Cemetery, which probably lead to the association with Arnhem.

My Grandmother used to tell me that following the death of both of her sons, her Aunt would open the windows at home whenever she heard aircraft flying over, a sad, yet somewhat amusing result of the effects of war.

Sgt. John Booth (d.23rd May 1943)

John Booth is commemorated at Runnymede War Memorial. He was 20 years old when he died. I know my grandparents went to Runnymede at the unveiling of the monument.

Sgt Frederick James "Jim" Richardson 100 Squadron (d.23rd June 1944)

Frederick James Richardson was my grandfather. He was shot down during a raid on rail communications at Reims in a Lancaster 111 JB289 and crashed at Hautvilliers-Ouville, Somme. Other crew members lost on the mission were:
  • Sergeant Ronald Sidney Bond
  • Sergeant Robert Henry Knowles
  • Flight Sergeant Sydney Mansfield
  • Sergeant Maurice Stanley Pegler
  • Flying Officer Charles Henry Tidby
  • Sergeant John William Willson
They are remembered at the St Pierre Cemetery, Amiens, France

Sgt. Edgar James Page 214 Squadron (d.7th September 1941)

Edgar Page served with 214 Squadron was my grandfather's cousin. I know very little at the moment but I'm researching my family tree.

Cpl Paul Hanner Royal Army Service Corps

I was originally on deferred service in the RAFVR. Along with many other aircrew trainees 'in waiting' I was transferred to the Army in '45. Did my trade course (tactical sketching) at Byfleet. Served in India with the 928 Transport Company which went through several changes in designations - Motor Ambulance, tank transporters and finally Field Butchery at Calcutta. Our CO was a Captain Smith and CSM was Tony Collett.

Sgt. Albert Frederick Haden 61 Squadron (d.13th Jan 1943)

Early in the morning of 13 January 1943 Lancaster bombers of No.61 Squadron, No.5 Group Royal Air Force were part of a force of 55 Lancasters from Nos. 1 & 5 Groups with target indication by 4 Mosquito aircraft from the Pathfinder Force, taking part in an attack on the Krupps works at Essen, one of the cities in the industrial heartland of Germany, the Ruhr. The Oboe equipment of the first Mosquito to arrive failed and the other 3 Mosquitos were all late. Because of this many of the Lancasters bombed on dead reckoning.

Flight Engineer Albert Haden is buried in the Reichswald War Cemetery.
