Pte. Robert W Mordey 2/7th Btn. Middlesex Regiment

Robert W Mordey born April 1917 was a general labourer residing in Uxbridge Middlesex at the outset of the War.

It is not clear when he enlisted but served with the Middlesex Regiment 2/7th Battalion. He was a private and according to records, he was initially recorded as Missing in Action believe POW on or about the 4th February 1944 during the Italian Campaign. Other records indicate he was a POW at Stalag Camp VIII-C at Konin Zaganski Poland. Whilst a POW he was severely punished for helping Jewish people. As a result of his injuries, he never married. The family do not at this stage know anything further about his war service. He died in 1983

Pte Ronald William Ion 2/7th Btn. Middlesex Rgiment (d.4th Jan 1944)

He was wounded in 1943 before his whole unit was fully deployed and died from his wounds in a military hospital on 4th of January 1944, aged 21 years. He is buried in the Bari war cemetery in Italy.

Pte. Peter Ronald "Mick" Hickman 2/7 Royal Middlesex

My dear old dad, Peter Hickman, was in the 2/7 Battalion Royal Middlesex Regiment and was a prisoner of war in Germany interned in Stalag 1VC on 13th June 1944. My Grandmother, Thurza, in 1944 would read tarrot cards for her friends and neighbours and decided that she would read her own card as she was so worried about her son as she had not heard from him.

(Despite knowing that you should never read your own cards!) Poor Grandmar saw death all around her son, this worried her terribly and I guess this may have been the dreadful prisoner of war camp that she later discovered he was in. Dad has never spoken much about these dark days but said he was treated well considering the circumstances. I believe his best pal was a gentleman called Harry Sugar and I know dad often thought about Harry and his lost comrades and they are still in his heart and memory today. Dad is still alive and kicking! Bless him - we are very lucky for our dad to have survived as we appreciate how fragile life can be.
