259899 Pte. Charles Joseph Hughes Australian Imperial Force 4th Trench Mortar Battery from:Beaufort, Victoria, Australia Charles Hughes was my paternal grandfather. Enlisted in Melbourne in 1915 and fought in Egypt and France where he was gassed in May 1918, hospitalised at Horton War Hospital, Surrey on 27th May 1918. He married Bridget Mary Power (of Portlaw, County Waterford, Ireland)at Chelsea Registry Office London on 27th June 1918, a child was conceived of that marriage, born in February 1919. Charles was repatriated to Australia one month earlier in January 1919, nothing is yet known about him after his return to Australia. Bridget had no contact with him after that and in 1924 she wrote to the Australian Army records in Canberra seeking his whereabouts, they were unable to assist her but forwarded Charles' three medals to her at her London residence.
