"Our worst fears have been realized, and your poor boy has passed away. He bore up well, in spite of the fact that the wound was so serious, and did splendidly at first. Then the wound showed signs of poisoning and it was necessary to operate and remove the shrapnel. He was a man of great spirit and bore it bravely and patiently, but his strength failed him.
