Rfmn. Samuel Magowan
British Army 14th Btn. Royal Irish Rifles
(d.1st July 1916)
Samuel Magowan served with the 14th Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles. Archaeological excavation of the largest known WWI training trench battlefield in Larkhill, Wiltshire, revealed extensive tunnel systems and 9km of fighting and support trenches. Over 300 pieces of graffiti have been recorded on the inner chalk walls of the tunnels.
Rifleman Magowan left his name there before leaving for the Somme where he was killed on the first day.
