254120 Pte. Alfred Bertie Green British Army Machine Gun Corps from:Ryhope, Sunderland Bertie Green was my great-grandfather. He had a wife and baby when he joined the Army at the age of 23. He transferred to the Machine Gun Corps in 1916 as a machine gunner. He survived the war but his hearing didn't.
He became a miner and went on to have another four children, including my grandmother. He went back down the mines and died in 1963. He never talked about his war experiences.
