Pte. Samuel McGuigan
British Army Royal Irish Rifles
from:Belfast
Samuel McGuigan, my Granddad's brother, was wounded in the back on 1 Jul 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme whilst serving in the 36th Ulster Division. Soldiers in that division had been initially successful in their assault on the German lines before being retreat, coming under fire from British and German artillery and German machine guns.
Between Dec 1916 and Dec 1918, when he was repatriated to the UK, Samuel was incarcerated in Langensalza POW camp.
