238471 Pte. Clifford George Gingell British Army 5th Battalion Royal Irish Regiment from:Bristol My Grandfather Clifford Gingell served in the 5th Battalion, Royal Irish Regiment throughout WW1. I remember him being sent a little box of shamrocks every St Patricks day. My uncle told me they were from his army pal, Mr Chris Kelly of Tiperarary Ireland. He seldom talked about his experiences but did say on the boat going ashore during the Suvla Bay Landing, he decided to follow right behind an officer when they reached the beach, a man next to him stood on a mine. Additional Information: I am Clifford’s grandson and also recall him saying he was recommended for a mention in dispatches after his efforts in fighting in Bulgaria/Macedonia but the officer died before it was related. He also said a solder by him was killed by cannon fire there. Of his memories in France he said he was a runner on Vimy ridge, if you raised your head a sniper would get you.
